Paros Seed Festival
Paros is going Green again
The Environmental & Cultural Park of Paros, Tao's Center, the Natural Farming Center of Greece have the pleasure to invite you to a festival of reforestation and revegetation of our island using the Natural Farming method.
Natural Farming is a method of land revegetation that uses no fertilizers or pesticides, where the soil is not tilled, turned or weeded. The natural farmer aims at working with nature rather than against it while creating fertile soil and being financially self-sufficient.
The sowing technique used is equally appropriate for agricultural land, fruit and vegetable gardens and even for the revegetation of arid land. We make clay balls that contain seeds from a variety of more than 100 plants, like fruit and forest trees, vegetables, grains and legumes and we throw these seedballs to the ground surface before the rain season starts. With this sowing method we tackle the issue of soil erosion, fertility improvement, pests and diseases all at once.
Panagiotis Manikis is the director of the Natural Farming Center of Greece and he will come to Paros with his crew in 28-31 October. Together we will organize seminars about natural farming for the general public as well as for amateur and professional farmers, hands-on workshops of seedball production and sowings of the seedballs in Tao's Center and in the Environmental & Cultural Park of Paros.
The first two days of the event we will focus on techniques of improvement in the fruit orchard and creating a natural vegetable garden and the next two days we will focus on the revegetation of land in the Environmental & Cultural Park of Paros - for which volunteers are needed.
It sincerely moves and encourages us that so many people and businesses have volunteered to help and have sponsored the event. Besides the three organizers, the Environmental & Cultural Park of Paros, the Natural Farming Center and Tao’s Center, we want to thank Blue Star Ferries, Yannis Daveronas Earthworks, Geoponikon Seeds & Plants Shop, the Paros Life & Naxos Life magazine, the Paros Innovation Group Innovaros, Parosweb and Wired Café, the Local Committee of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and the Cultural Heritage, the High School of Prodromos, and last but not at all least, all the people who have been interested and helpful in many ways all this time and are working on making this event truly successful and beneficial for our island.
Throughout the festival and depending on the participation and the special interest of the audience, there will be introductory and specialized talks and presentations on how Natural Farming is applied in vinyards, olive groves, farmed but also fallow land.
The program of the festival may be modified depending on the weather conditions.
The entrance is free of charge and your participation is more than welcome and indispensable.
